One final photo for Goodison farewell

Fan photographers to capture the
moment at last game

One last picture to be added to the Goodbye to Goodison exhibition after Sundays match

As Everton fans, players and staff prepare for Sunday’s emotional send-off to their revered ground, nine photographers are gearing up to take the ultimate shot that sums up 133 years of football there.

This single image will be added to the 17 currently on display at the Museum of Liverpool overlooking the Mersey. Bookending the summer-long exhibition Goodbye to Goodison, for which the nine photographers have spent the season capturing Everton’s match-day atmosphere, the picture should sum up the communal farewell to an iconic football stadium. See our recent feature about the project here.

“We knew that Goodbye to Goodison would open before the final game versus Southampton, says exhibition curator Chris Wardle, “but it was always important for me to make sure that momentous final day is captured in the display”.

“I’m hoping the selected photo will bottle that feeling of the last game for Evertonians. I want it to act as a visual memento for the fans privileged enough to be inside the ground on the day and act something that stirs emotions for those who can’t be there.”

“Each photographer will have their own ideas of what a photo from the final game should say. For some, it’ll be capturing joyous celebration, for others it’s a day of raw emotion.”

“This important last image will perfectly finish off our visual story celebrating the final season at Goodison Park.”

The photograph will be installed on June 5 and will remain in the Skylight Gallery, on the second floor of the Museum of Liverpool, alongside the other 17 images, until September 21.

Goodbye to Goodison brings together nine fan photographers who have documented the match-day experience at Goodison Park. Their work highlights the pubs, chippies, meeting places and family moments shared during this final season.

As Everton men’s team relocates to a state-of-the-art stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, fans are savouring the final moments in one of the country’s last great football grounds.
